Tastes Like Shakkar
By Nisha Sharma
🎧 Narrated by: Soneela Nankani, Vikas Adam
If Shakespeare Was an Auntie, Book 2
Book 174 of 2023

This is the follow up book to Dating Dr. Dil, which I loved. I would encourage people to read the books in order, because you meet the side characters and get some set up for each book. (Speaking of which – I cannot WAIT for the next book!!)

My one small complaint is about the enemies to lovers trope. And truly, I don’t know if it’s this book in particular or if I’m burnt out on the trope after reading 10 in October & November. There’s a fine line between too much hate and too little, and this had too little for me. I say I like when she hates him but he likes her, but I needed a little more tension, the relationship seemed too easy. This might be because a lot of the drama centered around familial obligations, which hasn’t been something I’ve had to deal with much in my life.

Perfect for: When you’re in the mood for something cozy and spicy.

🎧 Narration was fantastic!

A Lot Like Adios
By Alexis Daria
🎧 Narrated by: Seraphine Valentine
Primas of Power, Book 2
Book 164 of 2023

This could be read out of order, but I absolutely LOVED Book 1, so don’t skip it entirely! (I’m a sucker for a romance on a tv/film set.) Our couple is off in their own little bubble for most of the book, so while our FMC checks in with her cousins, we don’t have a lot of focus on the events of book 1.

Gabriel is opening a new location of his incredibly successful LA gym. He finds out his dream marketing expert for his campaign is actually his ex-best friend, Michelle. When he reaches out, she agrees to work on his campaign – but only if he’s willing to stay with her in New York. You know, normal business stuff if you’re in a rom com.

I adored the characters but the plot dragged a little. I almost enjoyed them more when they were working on their business project and actually talking to each other. Which might say more about myself as a reader than the book itself, but that’s where we really saw the character growth.

🎧 Excellent on audio.

Long Way Down
By Jason Reynolds
🎧 Narrated by: Jason Reynolds
Book 171 of 2023

Ok – something completely different! Lit fic, YA, and a novel in verse. I read this to complete the PopSugar Challenge, but it has been sitting on my shelf since it was published in 2017.

After his brother is murdered, fifteen-year-old Will knows the rules: no crying, no snitching, revenge. The entire book takes place during his elevator ride down from his apartment. On the way down, he talks to the ghosts of victims of gun violence that he knew or knew of. It was beautiful, and powerful, and sad.

🎧 I love listening to novels in verse by audio, and I loved listening to it read by the author so we got to hear how he wanted his work spoken.

QotD: (pick one or both)
– Did you participate in the 23 for ‘23 challenge to read books by BIPOC authors with a BIPOC main character? If so, how did it go?
– What was your most read genre last year?

Holiday Romance Mini Reviews

The week of Christmas I read 5 amazing Christmas books, putting my total Christmasy reads for this year at 7, which I think is a record! Do you like to read Christmas books or other holiday reads? Will you only read them during the holiday season, or will you read them anytime? Did you have a favorite you want to recommend to me?

If you’re like me and only read Christmas books in December, Save this post for your next holiday season!

(Two not mentioned: Kiss Her Once For Me & Wreck the Halls, which I have longer reviews of on Goodreads!)

Amor Actually
By Adriana Herrera, Alexis Daria, Diana Munoz Stewart, Mia Sosa, Priscilla Oliveras, Sabrina Sol, Zoey Castile
🎧 Narrated by: full cast
Book 166 of 2023

A reimagining of “Love Actually” with a diverse Latinx cast! I don’t know if I could pick a favorite, but I think I especially loved the stories based on plot lines that I didn’t like in Love Actually. I don’t usually gravitate towards novellas because I don’t feel like the book is going somewhere specific. These novellas are loosely tied together by a party they are all attending at the end, and since I’ve seen Love Actually a million times, it felt more tied together than other novella collections I have read. This is the spiciest of the Christmas books that I read. Highly recommend the audiobook!

A Merry Little Meet Cute
By Julie Murphy & Sierra Simone
🎧 Narrated by:  Joy Nash & Sebastian York
Book  165 of 2023

Funny, sweet, spicy, and surprisingly heartfelt.  An adult film star and an ex-boyband member are cast together in a Hallmark-esque Christmas movie. Bianca is trying to keep her less wholesome identity a secret, Nolan is one of her biggest fans, and she used to have his poster on her wall. The two try to keep it professional but are absolutely smitten with each other. I devoured this book and loved the entire cast of characters. Also highly recommend on audiobook!

A Wallflower Christmas
By Lisa Kleypas
🎧 Narrated by: Mary Jane Wells
Book 170 of 2024

I loved hanging out with the Wallflowers for a Christmas novella. The plot revolves around Rafe Bowman, brother to two of the wallflowers, whose parents are arranging a marriage to Natalie Blanford.

Read if: you have already read The Wallflower series (which I loved except for the first book)

Skip if: you can’t handle a man kissing a woman with dubious consent. Which is reasonable and I question myself for being able to side eye it and still enjoy the book.

The Captain’s Midwinter Bride
By Liana De la Rosa
Book 173 of 2023

All of the lovely historical romance vibes of The Wallflowers, none of the dubious consent! I loved The Captain’s Midwinter Bride so much I read it WITH MY EYES!

The Daltons have been married for over two decades, but barely know each other. Captain Philip Dalton is now retired, and has decided to get to know the woman he married so long ago, and the mother of his children. I loved watching the two of them get to know each other. They are also preparing for the marriage of their daughter, and I loved watching Philip explore his relationship with his children as well. I’m excited to continue this series.

Same Time Next Year
By Tessa Bailey
🎧 Narrated by: William LeRoy and Carmen Vine
Book 175 of 2023

Ok, this is a New Year’s romance, not a Christmas romance, but I’m including it anyway. This is a delightful green card marriage romance if you like Tessa Bailey’s writing. She’s kind of kooky, but I love how absolutely head over heels her men are for her women on like page one. And after TWO books in a week where no meant yes (ew), I love that enthusiastic consent is also part of her romantic scenes. I loved the narrators.

Did you read any of these? Have any I need to add to my next Christmas TBR?

October Favorites

This month started very promising – I read 10 books by October 16th. After finishing my 100th book of the year, I lost my momentum with binge reading all day and have only finished two books since then. Which makes it sound like I quit reading, which I haven’t, I’ve just been reading Kingdom of Ash at a reasonable person’s pace of 50 pages a day. Unfortunately that book is almost 1,000 pages long, so at this rate it’ll take me until well into November to finish it.

Fantasy

Tower of Dawn

Amazon | Bookshop

Tower of Dawn is the second to last book in the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas. If you’re new to Throne of Glass, you’ll want to start with either Assassin’s Blade (novella prequel set) or Throne of Glass (the first book). Right now is a great time to buy if you want the original covers – the new covers come out in February 2023.

Paranormal fiction

Sign Here

Amazon | Bookshop

Sign Here is maybe the best debut novel I’ve read all year. Chapters alternate between Pey – who works for Hell – and the family he is trying to make a deal with. Sign Here is completely different from anything I’ve read all year, and I was riveted until the very end! If you love dark humor, this is for you.

I would check trigger warnings if you have any sensitivities – there are pretty vivid depictions of torture and self harm. There were two pages I barely skimmed and mostly skipped.

For the Bridgerton Fans

A Reckless Match

Amazon | Bookshop

A Reckless Match was my first Kate Bateman book, and I immediately read the second in this series. I would have read the third too, but it doesn’t come out until December!

This series follows rival families the Davies and the Montgomerys (Montgomeries?). No one remembers quite how the rivalry started – was it over a stolen pig or a stolen woman? – but they are committed to continuing the rivalry.

If you like childhood rivals to lovers, you’ll love this one.

Devil in Winter

Amazon | Bookshop

Devil in Winter is the third book in the Wallflowers series, but is everyone’s favorite. If you cannot handle reading books out of order, you can start with the first book – but it’s everyone’s least favorite. I would recommend reading the second – It Happened One Autumn – before Devil in Winter, because it does set this book up nicely.

The Wallflowers series follows four friends – Annabelle, Lillian, Evie, & Daisy – who band together to help fight their wallflower tendencies so that they can get husbands.

All of the books I read in October
